BURNHAM INDUSTRIAL SCHOOL.

SPORTS AND INSPECTION

The annual sports and inspection of the Burnham Industrial School were held yesterday. The day was bright, though windy, and a large number of visitors, including many from Christchurch, as well as the residents of the district, attended the gathering, which was most successful. The grounds of the school were in splendid order, and everything in connexion with the buildings was very neat and well kept. Among those present were: —Mr R. H. Pope (Inspector of Industrial Schools), Captain Meddings, N.Z.S.C., who inspected the Cadet Corps, Hon. C. A. C. Hardy, M.L.C., Mr G. Witty, M.P., Mr and Mrs F. J. Board, and Mrs Guise, members of the Official Visiting Committee, the Revs. J. Smyth, Webb, I. Bernstein and others.

The proceedings opened with a general parade of the Cadet Corps and the boys of the school. The corps, headed by the brass band and pipers, and under the command of Captain Archey and Lieut. Yates, paraded on the football ground, and. was inspected by Captain Meddings. An adjournment was then made for lunch, which was provided by the institution, and then the competitors in the fire drill display got to work. There was a large number of entrants, who generally gave a firstrate display, being exceedingly smart and quick in their work. The experts in signalling then took their turn, and here again some good work was done, though probably it was more appreciated by the initiated than, by the mere layman. The events of the afternoon were undoubtedly those that took place in the swimming baths, and a long and interesting programme of races, diving, life-saving, etc., was gone through, there being much enthusiasm displayed over the various events which reflected credit on Mr Garrard, the swimming instructor. The Principal of the school, Mr Archey, and the members of the staff, conducted those visitors over the institution who -wished to inspect it, and then afternoon tea was provided in the big quadrangle. A big Christmas tree had been installed in the new gymnasium, arid in the evening the boys foregathered there and the prizes won were presented. The boys will make their annual excursion to Quail Island shortly; the fatigue party goes down on the 7th January, and the general party ten days later.
