THE COMING ELECTIONS.

' RICCARTON COUNCIL. LABOUR CANDIDATES' ADDRESSES. Messrs G. D. White, T. J. Stolres and J. Dempster, Labour candidates for tho Riccarton Borough Council, addressed a meeting at the corner of Division ami Peveril streets on Friday evening, Mr H. Uru presided over a good attendance. He said that he was not there to take sides with any Party; but he, personally, thought that tho labouring section of the community should bo represented by councillors selected from their own ranks. Mr Dempster said that tho workers should have direct representation on all local bodies charged with the collection and allocation of public money, that iiie Labour movement throughout Hie world was becoming powerful, and the Labour Party was rapidly taking its proper place in government and in local affairs. He urged all present to assist in placing the Labour candidates on tho Coun-'il, for he felt sure that their confidence would not be misplaced. Mr White said that lie was net there to find fault with tho present Council: it had done good work. Tho Borough was young, and should be up-to-date- in its methods. Labour was asserting itself everywhere, and wav proving itself capable of dealing with national and municipal affairs. He c'id not think it wise to place on tho Council men whose private business would clash with that of tho borougi's. He favoured the wago system in place of contract wherever practicable. In answer to questions, ho said ho would be in favour of a volnntoer nrc brigade, and would give preference to local industries and labour, provided all things woro equal. Mr Stokes said he had no apology to make for tho Labour candidates coming forward "as Labour had decided to tak~e a hand in municipal government. He citod tho Christehurcli City Council as an example for Labour administration and expressed the opinion that tho electors would not regret placing the three Labour candidates on the Council. Asked if ho was in favour of ratine; on the unimproved values, ho said that he was nnil as a councillor would be prepared io give a loal in bringing about tho Teform. He pointed out, however, that r> was a matter for the ratepayers to decTSe for themselves. A resolution expressing thanks and ronficTence in the candidates was carrier! unanimously. RANGIORA. The only candidate for tho Rangiora .Mayoralty is tho present Mayor, Mr J. Sansom, and it is not likely that he will meet with any opposition. Considerable interest is being taken in the election of borough councillors, and mainly as the result of activity on the part of some who consider a change m the personnel of the Council desirable Tho number on the electors Toll has been increased from 477 to 756, by the addition of ratepayers' wives, and those having residential qualifications. There will be a good choice of-candi-dates. Of tho present Councillors Ayres, H. Boyd, C. I. Jennings. H. Dix, W. Smith, and I*. H. Walker, intend to be renominated. Mr Dix had decided to retire, but in Tespons© to numerous requests he has now clecided to enter the contest. Councillor Bell is yet undecided as to whether ho will seek re-election — his hesitatioii being duo to business reasons. Councillors Bridget and Jordan have definitely decided to retire. Thero are six new candidates already in th-3 field with a promise of more. The certainties are Messrs F. B. Lane, W. McGruer, W. Rowe, J. R. Sutherland, Carson Wilson, and W. Wright.

Mr H. Davis has beer, nominated as a candidato for £ho Mayoralty of Ashburton'. He li.is also been nominated as the borough's representative on the Hospital ~ and Charitable JSid Board, of which body ho is the present chairman. Mr Davis is just completing his tenth successive year as Sfityor. T/iero is no likoliliood of any otiior'candidate lor tho Mayoral -vlxm,Mr J. Ainyer has been nominated for the Brighton Council hy Messrs C. H. Winny and Edwin Blake. Messrs T. J. Mcßride, J. McCombs, W. R. Smith, and D. G. Sullivan will address the electors in tho Linwood Ward in the Rolleston street Hall tomorrow at 8 p.m', and Social Hall, Leyden street, on Thursday at 8 p.m. Messrs McCombs, Smith and Sullivan will address the electors at the corner of Gloucester street and Canal Kcservo at 7.30 p.m., and at the corner of Armagh and Hanmer streets at 8.15 p.m. on Wednesday; and at tho corner of Ollivier's road and Tuam street at 7.30 p.m., and at the corner of Graiton and Charles streets at 8.15 p.m. on Friday, Mr Win. DobJ>s. candidate for Sydenham Ward, will address tbo electors in the Waltham Hall to-night: JSeckenham Hall, Somerfiold street, to-morrow night; and Oddfellows' Hall, Selwyn street, on Thursday night, in each case at 8 o'clock. Mr T. Jt Mcßride (candidate for Christchurch Mayoralty), Messrs Dunlop, Kay, and Hoppy (candidates tor tho St. Albans Ward), and the SocialDemocratic candidates for tho Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, will address the electors in St. Matthew's Schoolroom at 8 o'clock this evening. Messrs George Scott, Edward Smith, and A. M. Loasby. candidates for the Linwood Ward, will address a public meeting at the corner of Wilson's road and Charles street at 7.30 o'clock this evening.

Mr H. Holland, a candidate for the Christchurch Mayoralty, will address the electors in the Kugby street Hall at 8 o'clock this evening, and in tho Young Men's Guild Hall, St. Albans, at 8 o'clock to-morrow night. Mr Holland's General Committee will meet in the Alexandra Hall at 8 o'clock tomorrow night.

Dr. Thackcr, a candidate for tiio Christchurch Mayoralty, will address public meetings to-morrow at the corner of Poulsen and Selwyn streets at 7.30 p.m., and at the Football UaU, Lawson street, at 8.15 p.m. Mr J. W. RowJcvs; a candidate for the Spreydon Mayoralty, will address the electors in the Methodist School, Selwyn street South, to-morrow; in the Coronation Hall Mill road, on Friday, and in the Harrington street Schoolroom, on the 28th inst., all meetings at 8 p.m.
