CAMPAIGN AGAINST BOOKMAKERS.
A WELLINGTON DETECTIVE'S MISSION. (from a correspondent.) WELLINGTON, April 19. Preparations are being made by a well-known detective to institute a regular campaign against bookmakers in this city, and against one firm in particular. . Latterly the bookmaker himself has not been overmuch apparent, having arranged a series of sub-agencies which do his work on commission, and which he visits at regular intervals for the purpose of receiving amounts deposited and paving to recipients the regular scale of commission. The detective's nim is to get at these , agents, who chiefly consisted of barmen and shopkeepers in a smnll way of business, and the campaign promises to be interesting Another objective of the detective is those who run double cards on behalf of bookmakers. At present nearly every factory and shop contains one person at least who runs a double card on behalf of a bookmaker, and it is reported that at the last race meeting nearly a score of doubles cards •were bring hawked around one business establishment hero. The detective is after all such peonle, and tho progress of the game promises to bo well worth watching.
