FATAL MOTOR CAR ACCIDENT.

(PRESS ASSOCIATION TELECRAM.) HAWERA, January 1. A fatal accident occurred at tho Normanby Railway Station crossing tliis aftornoon, when a motor car driven by Frederick Butterworth, of Gpunake, with whom was John Young, also of Opunake, *was run into by a special train from New Plymouth. Young was killed instantaneously. Biltterworth * was seriously injured, and was taken to the Hawera Hospital. Young was a single man, aged 34, and a blacksmith. Tho motor car was smashed tti pieces. Mr T. A. B. Bailey, S.M., Coroner, .' held an inquest yesterday touching tho - death of Frederick Joseph Clarke, a t dairyman, aged 44 years, who met with . an accident on December 30tb. and died • the following day, leaving a wife and four children. The evidence set out that on tho 30th deceased was nnhar- ■ nessing a horse, and forgot to undo one of the breeching straps when taking it r.tit. The cart dragged behind, and the animal, becominc; frightened, bolted , round the yard. The cart passed over * deceased. Deceased was taken Tnside, suffering severely, and Dr. J." R.-, Thomas was called in. Dr. Thomas re- > turned tho next day, and found deceased no worse. In tho evening his ' • condition changed, -and tho doctor"was . summoned, and shortly after arrival J deceased died suddenly. A verdict was r - returned in accordance with the mecUcftl. evidence, that death had' resulted from internal luemorrhago, following an ac-v- - dent.

He was a good swimmer, and it is suppose that ho was seized with cramp. He ; was a married man with one child.

DUNEDIN, January 1. A sudden death occurred at the Waikouaiti Races to-day. Mr H. B. Mountney, whoso son had a horso running in tho Second Trot, dropped dead whifo watching the horses doing their . prel'minary runs. Deceased was an old resident of Otago.
