A PECULIAR SITUATION. SYDNEY. December 24. The High Court recently declared invalid the award obtained by tho Merchant Service Guild of Australasia, on the ground that there was no dispute extending beyond the limits of oiio State. In consequence an acute position has arisen. Tho okl State award for New South "Wales has expired, the result being that the captains and officers of both New South "Wales and the rest of Australia are without a legal award covering tho conditions of their employment. Tho coastal ship-owners of New # South Wales recently intimated that they were willing to meet the Guild in conference, and the Guild , replied agreeing to do so, provided v.ages and conditions were discussed. To this tho shipowners havo not replied. Tho Guild believes that it possesses tho moral and active support of tho Seamen's Unions.
