Tho annual cricket matok between Canterbury and Otago was commenced on tho Carisbrook ground to-day, "luo wickob and outfield vero in good order. Tho clay was line with a fnirly strong breeze.' and thero was a fair attendanco of the public. Canterbury won tho foss, and went in to bat, Caygill and Norman opening. With tho total at seven, Norman was bowled by J>ownos. Sims camp in and poked one up to Siodeberg at cover. Ilickmott joined Caygill. only to see the latter edge one from tho slips to hoff. Hayes took his place at the wickot. Both men played carefully. Hayes brought 20 ,up off Downes with a. clean drivo past tlio bowler, and. two run:; lator Hayes was stumped by Chadwick, when stepping out to Downes. Sandman came in, and a few moments later Hickmott brought up 30 after 45 minutes' play. At 33 Hickmott, with 17 to his credit, was bowled by Downes. Reese, captain of tho Canterbury team, ea:«o in. and scored tho first boundary of tho match by driving Downes to tho off rails. In tho same over ho lilted a ball straight over the bowler's head, but Eckhoff smartly saved tho boundary.
