A charge of theft brought Alfred Clements Randall McPliuil, a weliuressud young man, betoio Air T. A. B. Hailey, S.M., at the Magistrate's Couit yesterday. McPhail was employed i as a clerk at the Opawa railway sta- j tion. and ho was charged that on or ' about December 3rd, lie stoic £4 7s '. 2d, the property of tho New Zealand ! (Jovernin.ut. Air F. W. Johnston, ' who appeared tor. the accused, entered a plea 01 guilty. j Mr Johnston said that the accused, who was only 21 years old, received a j salary of £2 2s a week. Ho paid 17a (3d per week for board and the balauco was spent somewhat too freely. Mr Johnston said that the methods used by tho accused showed that he was a ' novice, for ho had taken money from i the cash box and instead of telling' his trouble to his people or his friend.-* and replacing tho money, he had told the officials tiiat the money had been stolen. Counsel said that up till this time the accused had borne a good character. j "This is a sad case," remarked the Magistrate. "Hero is a boy only 21 years old, who is just getting on in tho world, when ho does a foolish , thing like this.
