RELIEF WORKS.

TO TECS EDITOR, OP "THE PRESS." . Sir, —I have read to-day in your paper a most pathetic letter from the wife of an unemployed man who signs herself "Cold and Hungry." There is work in tho country, I believe, for men, but they must bo good agricultural labourers. Now would not this bo a good timo for the Tramway Board to start their Papanui, Fendalton, and Dallington extensions. Theso would employ somo 250 men for at least three months. Why wait until the summer, when work is plentiful ? The two large freezing companies aro on the point of closing down their works, adding a further quota to the unemployed. Wero the Tramway Board immediately to start their long-authorised extensions, only employing married men, %rhose families aro their own best customers, they would be doing a really charitable act, and of great service, to the community, and bring bodily and mental relief to many a poor family who will otherwise go— COLD AND HUNGRY.
