MAGISTRATES' COURT.

(Before Mr T. A. B, Bailoy, S.M.). BY-LAW CASES. For cycling on tho footpath, Eva Marsh was fined ss, Arnold llowell.was convicted and discharged, and Carl Tritt, Herbert King, William Skerten, Frank Carter. Walter Mills, and Reginald Rhind were each fined 7s and costs. For cycling at night without lights, Percy llofamson and George Merton woro each fined 10s and costs. George Merton was fined a further 10s and costs for having given a wrong name and address to the constable. For riding a motor-cyclo which had no registered number attached, William Stanley Richards was fined 5s and costs. , DEFENCE ACT CASES. Charles Arnold Campion, who did not appear, was fined 40s, to be reduced to 5s if the oath be taken within seven days, for having failed to take the oath of allegiance. LARRIKJNISM. James Do Rungs and John Wheeler woro charged with wilful daniago to property at Riccarton to the extent or 7s 6d. Dβ Rungs pleaded not guilty and Wheeler guilty. Mr Matthews, the owner of the property, gave evidence as to a series of acts of larrikinisro. Evidence .having boon heard at length, his Worship said that he would hold each equally guilty with the other, and would fine each 10s, and order them to divide tho costs of witnesses and the amount of damage done. MARKSMEN. Oscar Collins and Randolph Coates pleadnd guilty to discharging "missiles," to wit peas, to the annoyance or passers-by in the Riccarton road. Having been severely cautioned, they were convicted and discharged. DISMISSED. George Frederick Robinson (Mr A. T. Donnelly) pleaded not guilty to a charge. of having published a document likely to he mistaken for a legal process issued out of tho Magistrate's Court. It was stated that tho facts were admitted, and all depended upon the interpretation by his Worship of Section 19 of the Police Offences Act, au<l his ruling as to whether the paper produced came within it. After hearing Mr Donnelly, his Worship dismissed the case. IDLE AND DISORDERLY. James Connolly (Mr Leathern) was charged with being an idle and disorderly person, having insufficient lawful means of support. Constables Bickerdike, Sparks, and Smart gave evidence in support of the charge. Hβ was convicted, and ordered to como up for sentence when called upon, his brother promising to see that he left the city. NUISANCES. Mary Ellen Lloyd, alias Hughes, pleaded guilty to being a common prostitute, and to having importuned passers-by ;in a public street. She was sentenced to fourteen days' imprisonment, with hard labour. Elizabeth Ankins pleaded guilty to a similar charge, and was similarly dealt with. REMANDED. Frederick Dillimore, charged with tho theft of lead, nails, etc., on the application of the police was remanded until July 16th, bail being allowed, self in £50 and one surety of £50. ALLEGED CRUELTY. Charles Alfred Kiernan and James Russell Kieruan were charged that, between'-'February end June, at Halswell, having charge of a bay filly, they failed to provide it with proper food. Mr A. T. Donnelly appeared for both accused. The cases were taken separately, and evidence heard at considerable length. The case against tho former defendant was dismissed, and James Russell Kiernan was fined 40s and costs.

INDUSTRIAL CASE. Paul Dietrich and Co. pleaded not guilty to a charge of having failed to keep wages and overtime books, as required by law. Tho evidence of Mr W. H. Hagger, officer in chargo of the local branch of tho Department of Labour, and the statement of defendant having been heard, defendant was fined 20s and coste. DRAINAGE. George Oakley (Mr Cassidy) was charged with having connected a water closet with the sewer without being licensed. Mr Alpers, who appeared for the Drainage Board, said that as the work had been done in an emergency, the .Board would not press for a heavy penalty, but would ask for a warning to other plumbers. After evidence had been heard, the case was dismissed. Jolm le Mesurier was charged with laving to connect a water closet with the mam sewer. Defendant, who did not appear, Wfl s fined 40s and costs.

QUARRELSOME -NEIGHBOURS. On a charge of having assaulted Jennie Baughan, a woman, named Amy Lynn pleaded guilty. Defendant guilty to a charge of having broken a window. The evidence

showed that tho parties wero neighbours, and had taken part in a stormy dispute. Defendant was fined 20s and costs for assault, and the second charge was dismissed. Richard Newman, who admitted that he had assaulted Sydney Baughan, was fined 40» and costs. J ASHBURTON. J (Before Mr V. G, Day, S.M.) William Closes, for whom Mr Orbell appeared, was charged with a breach of tho Canterbury Threshing Mills Owners' award by charging an employee. 17s 8d IK.T week for food, instead of l<is per week.
