Collections for these" or some such funds are continually being made on all ocean-going steamers, and I should like to know what becomes of the funds. On one occasion a steward was found dead in bed; heart disease. A vspecial collection was made for his mother. A week later, on the same vessel, a seaman fell overboard, and a special collection was made for his wife. Recently a special collection has been made for the seamen from the Star of Canada, and tho question is when are these funds called upon? —Yours, etc.,

(There is an organisation known as the New Zealand Shipwreck Relief Society, having its headquarters in Dunedin, which relies for its incomo on donations from shipping companies and private subscriptions. On the passenger steamers trading between New Zealand and Australia, concerts are regularly held, the proceeds being handed over to tho New Zealand Shipwreck Ptelief Society. This society has, on every occasion, where tho circumstances warranted, rendered financial assistance to distressed seamen and passengers of wrecked [vessels.—Ed. "The Press/]
