RELIEF "WORKS.. TO THE EDITOR OF "THE PRESS."

Sir., —I am tho wife of an unfortunate unemployed. My husband has tramped the city for the past few weeks but can find no employment. Wo feel tho pinch a'i hard times keenly, and are often short of food and fuel. Why does not our Labour Mayor start relief work for the unemployed, as several of his predecessors have done during the worst winter months? Every job advertised in tho papers is just rushed; my husband has known over twenty apply for a job which was only to last a few days. Men and women must live, and there aro many who, like . myself, aro in desperate straits, and yet would not seek relief from any charitable society. Surely there is some work that, can be found for tho unfortunates. Cannot you, through your columns, got tho authorities to realise that while they are sitting besido their snug firesides there aro many who are cold and hungry, and in all likelihood will probably bo turned out by their landlords if they don't pay their rent. That is the position of myself, and I know there aro many others. Hoping you will see your, way to do what you can for us unfortunates. —Yours, etc., COLD AND HUNGRY.
