Against this deep December blue Ono springing, crimson Rose!— O Cleanness, Clearness, Colour, Jbight, Ever before vrcre ye co bright ? And O fresh Fragrance—from the sene» . Straight, to the. eoul that .flowsl . ... ■
Summer through all the garden burns, Green glows, amid the graes; ' "■.. And hark I that rapturous rich Thrush, With cries of joy that glide and gush How gladdens he-the shining airs ' as they emporhimed paes! '
O happy Flower end Bird, that can So answer Earth and Sky; That, from them life and growth and food Eeceiving, can, for gratitude, . "With eong and sheen and odour thus . The Givers glorily! ■'■ • While I, who song, nor scent, nor eheca Possess, that might <repay, Yet largelier breathe and livelier live— « Must I tako all, and nothing give? Less tlian ono grass-blado can I do. For this all generous Day? "Thou canst be happy!" Welcomo, Q . Thrice welcome, winged Thought! To Colour, in the Eoae afloat— To Music, in the Throstle's throat— .This bounteous blessing, shall in me' To Happiness be wrought. Surrendcr'd, given all up to Joy, Shall I dispense so dower? A sunshine heart, a mind in- tune, Can these to Beauty bring no boon? Must not the whole Earth brighter b« For one email aoul in flower ? Yea! currents rarer than the air, Light-rays of subtler scope, Twixt Mind and Mind that freighted ply, Rich from my mind, and strong, shall fly— Carolling Joy, exhaling Cheer, Kadiating Power, and Hopel Brcatne, then, bloom on, O porfect Flow«rl Sing on, delicious Voice! And thou, my Soul! tako up thy taskSimply to listen, look and bask, With zest and zeal! With ail thy might Be happy and lejoice! • . . . Thou dearest Bay! that lit {So Eoie, . That woke the Throstle's eong, That let.moeee and hear—who knowe. Already whero thy influence flows ? "Towards what backwater of the world •'■ - Thy wave ef life rune strong?
