CRICKET UMPIRES.
TO THE EDITOR OF "THE PRESS." Sir, —At a recent meeting of tho local cricket authorities reference was made to the difficulty of securing umpires for tho various matches, and to the still greater difficulty of ensuring that the officiating umpires -were in all respects qualified to act as such. 1 have a recollection of a well-known umpire who, after having for years acted with credit to himself and satisfaction to players and public, was displaced in one of the more important matches for reasons best known to the then governing body, and I am certain there are many who share my opinion, that his defection from tho ranks of qualified umpires was due almost entirely to:tho treatment accorded him by that body. Should any similar cases have occurred, it is unnecessary to look further for at' least one reason, for the difficulty now experienced in obtaining the sea-vices of thoroughly qualified and nonwobbling -umpires.—Yours, etc., BATSMAN. February 9th.
