AMATEUR ATHLETICS.
TO TOB EDITOR Off "THE ruESS." Sir, —In commenting on certain athletic events run at a recent athletic meeting in Wellington, you sarcastically revive the year-old controversy of tho respective merits of Hill and myself. As you already know, I have retired from the athletic field, and Hill has tho opportunity to show his ability at the forthcoming Olympic Games. I think it is very poor taste on your part to continue tho argument any further. My reputation as a runner still holds good in America, whore my performances -were made, and I can always go back And receive a hearty welcome from tho Press without tho fear ol any post-mortem.—Yours, etc., GUY HASKINS. December 18 th. P.S.—I enclose tho offending parag*aph. [Tho paragraph to which Dr. Haskins refers was a portion of a Wellington telegram published on Monday, which stated that a feature of the amateur athletio meeting on. Saturday was G. N. Hill's ru"n in the mile. "Hill is" an -Auckland runner, who wished to run a trial with Guy Haskins beforo th© representatives for tho last Pestival of Empire Sports wero picked, hut was refused, much to tho disgust of many people, who considered that he was tho better man. On Saturday he cut out a mile comfortably in 4min 22 2-ssec, which is only 2-ssec outsido of the famous Shru'bb's run in Auckland in 1905."—Ed. "Tho Press."]
