WHOLESALE CLUB SALE NEWS.
Saturday, June 17, 1911. Lon"- before ten o'clock yesterday morning Manchester street was black with the crowd of eager buyers waiting for tho opening of tho doors of this collosstil feast of bargains. Within three minutes of the opening, of the doors the warehouse wae full of peopkv buying bargains—the grocery department was immediately packed—tea and other bulk goods were sold in armfuls, ana within a fow lwurs the wliolo of tho grocery department was stripped of lta merchandise —over £-100 worth.
In order to facilitate easy purchase, only threo or four hundred people were allowed in tho premises at a time, and all da-y long the- most strenuous guard had to bo kept on tho two entraneo doors.
This eystem worked marvellously well, •with, tlio result that between three- and four thousand people were able to buy bargains-yesterday with, a minimum of inconvenience and squashing-
It was quite impossible, however, to anell tho enthusiasm of tho crowd once ie bargains wero before them. "Wit/, •the goods in front of them in. all their attractive freshness, the real significance of tho lowness of the prices at which they were marked, burst upon them, and bargain-buying knew no bounds. ■ ■
There was no dilly-dallying—every-body was out for bargains, and everybody got them. .
The exit door formed a most interesting study to the observant on-looker right through the flay. The thousands of men and women who wont in, keen for bargains, came out through this door, and every face showed the accomplishment of their object.
Young ladies emerged, arms laden with parcels suggestive of new frocks for next-to-nothing, laco and ribbon bargains, etc., pink of cheeks, rufllcd somewhat as to hair, hats perhaps a bit awry, but happy, knowing that "they'd got the bargains, they waited in even more generous measure than they'd hoped for.
The mothers were.. easy to pick as they came out. They didn't have their oig'groocry parcels with them, nor their heavy household purchases, but you could tell they r d had a good time by the look of subdued-pleasurable excitement, suggestivo of sure bargains and money still in their purses for future purchases at this sale before very long.
The bicycle sundries were sold right out during the first hour of the sale, and remarkably heavy business was done amongst the ladies coats and costumes, crockery, dress goods, while tho furniture department showed solid sales all the day.
The advantage of experienced organisation in the arrangements mad© for convenience of choppers,' were very noticeable right through the day, and. the management of this tremendous sale, conducted by W. Strange and Co., may safely attribute tho highly satisfactory results of the day's business very largely to their efforts in this direction.
It is, of course, difficult-to estimate such things, but wo feel that we speak well within the mark, when we say that, never has such a volume of merchandise been purchased in a single dny for cash in the business history of this city as was bought at the Wholesale Club sale yesterday. Tho filling of orders that came by mail, was alone a big task. A special staff of assistants was deputed, to look after the interests of country clients who ordered by mail, directly the sale opened, so that all might have a fair chance at the wonderfui bargains offered.
