THE TERRA NOVA.
PREPARING FOR SURVEY CRUISE.
The British Antarctic expedition ship Terra Nova has now practically completed a very extensive overhaul, and is in better condition than she has been for many years. The hull of the snip has been subjected to an exhaustive examination, and aJI detects have been made good. The seams and the decks have been re-caulked throughout, and all perished or defective woodwork replaced with new timber. The Terra Nova has also been cleaned and repainted fore-and-aft, and from truck to keelson, and she now presents a very trim and smart appearance. Tho vessel's, engines and boiler have also been thoroughly overhauled. Steam was raised yesterday, and tho engines and auxiliaries given a trial run oE several hours, everything working smoothly and without any hitch. Next Saturday the Terra Nova will move from her berth in Dampier's Bay to tbo breastwork alongside the Harbour Board's store, and will take in tho balance of tho stores and gear required for her three months' surveying cruise. Sh'o will also ship about 400 tons.of coal. The Terra Nova was originally timed to leavo Lyttelton on her northern cruise- on July 3rd, but it has now been decided to postpone her departure until July 10th. She is expected to return to Lyttelton about tho middle of October. "After that the vessel will at once start to refit and get ready for her second voyage to tho Antarctic, She will have a very largo quantity of stores, gear,-and'coal to load, and will probably be in just as deep trim when she leaves Lyttelton for tho South as she was last November.
