THE SUMNER MEMORIAL.
A DIFFICULTY. Speaking to a'"Press" reporter yesterday, Mr 11. G. Marriner, Mayor of Sumner, said that with the Government Coronation subsidy of £?50 tho burnnor pcoplo had hoped to raiso a siiUieicnt sum to erect a substantial bathing shed jn the western bay. Tho Government, however, had since inti- ■ mated that they would not subsidise a building of that nature; if anything of the sort, woe contemplated it must be a bath "In their first memorandum,' added Mr Marrinor, "tho Government stated thoy would subsidise LI for £1 up to £250 any sum raised for the erection of a public buUdihc .-is a Coronation memorial, and I fail to see-now any one can gay this is not a building to be used for a public purpose. .Now they t*bt their offer round t?i ' -^, that th , c , bu, Wisiß must bo a bath. This would bo quite useless for Siimner Mere have excellent facilities for sea bathing. We are, therefore, in a dilemma #as to what steps wo should take to gam tho subsidy offered by tbe Government, for we arc already well provided for in tho way of a puhHc | library and council offices."
