SHEEP DOG TRIALS.

THHID DAY.

The Christchurch Sheep Dog Trials wore concluded on Saturday. The weather waa pleasant, and there was a. fair attendance. The liuutaway Class waa run ofi, and some very good work was done. The oourse wns slightly altered Irom former years, a straight run up being given to tho middle polos, and the slew was to tho left instead ot tho right. Soino very good work was done by a number o£ dogs that completed the course, and tho strength of the sheep caused times to bo faster than usual. On the other hand many dogs failed early in their attempts. The winner, Mr H. G. Waters's Bob, won tho event last year, and Messrs Fletcher Humphrey and Company's challenge trophy, which had to be won two years in succession or three years at intervals, thus becomes Mr "Waters's property. Mr K. W. Trotter's Quid was second, F. Richardson's Roy third, J. K. Forrester's -Son fourth, and J. W. Clarke's Gael fifth. At the conclusion of tho trials three hearty cheers were given for the judge, Mr W. O. Butharfo.d. A shepherd's race was got up, the winner being Mr W. G. Brown, Mr A. A. Fraser second, nnd Mr H. McGuinness third. Several 'competitors gave exhibition performances over the huntaway course for the benefit of spectators, a number of whom had arrived alter tho completion of the trials, tho latter being over- earlier than was expected. Tho following work was done: — F. Luscombc'a Scott only managed to get his «hocp through the first pair of poles, and G. Wright's Noble met with no better success. F. Richardson's Roy, working with plenty of noise, and entirely by command, took his sheep slowly through the first and second poles, and tho dog making a successful turn completed the course in 7_oin 33sec.T. Hogg's Noel scattered his sheep after passing tho first poles. R. W. Trotter's Quid working slowly, but with plenty of noise, and under good command, put the "sheep over the wholo course in timin 2__ec. J. W. darkens Gael forcing his sheep very fast took his sheep, though they were getting distressed, through all seta of poles in the quick time of .mm 41sec J. F. Poll's Boy had little trouble in getting his sheep through the first and fecond poles, but then hunted them to the right instead of the left, and tho run was given up. J. L. Stace's Rough scattered his sheep after passing tho first poles. A. Turpin's Scott missed the first poles, and was called.. off. J. Fitzgerald's . Clyde lost his ■cJ-to-p at the' start, hunting them in the wrong direction. R. Weir's Spark took hit sheep ' through the first poles, but missed the second. A. Harper's Scott stood off his sheep and was slow in getting them through tho first pole 3, kept a good line through the second poles, but took the sheep below «l)e last pair. They were brought back and put through in 6min 46sec. J. K. Forrester's Ben did good work over two-thirds of the course, and though the sheep separated after passing the second poles, Ben got them together Hgain, and completed the course in Smin Usee. R. Milliken's Tweed took his sheep through the first and second poles, but then worked slack, and allowed his sheep to get away. J. Grimley's Scott scattered his sheep at the start. A. A. Fraser's Scott and H. McGuinnesa's Rowdy, and G. Ross's Dick and W. T. Pollock's Don did not get the sheep through the first poles. H. G. Waters's Bob did good work all through, taking his sheep over the full course without a mistake, and in fine style, his time being .mm 3_s_c, which waa exceptionally fast. J. Delargy's Clyde scattered his sheep at the start. D. A. Hanson's Paddy took hig sheep through the first and second poles successfully, and after letting them get too far to the left, he brought them back, and completed the course in 6n_in _2__c O. _.'. Evans's Spark negotiated the first and second poles, and then Bplit and lost his sheep. T. D. McLeod's Clyde failed to get his sheep through the first poles, and H. T. Little's Laddie had a similar experience. G. Ross's Moss did a fair all-round performance, only allowing his sheep to got a Jittlo off the line after passing the second poles. tlia time for the course was smin 9seo. ™. T. Pollock's Clyde got bis sheep successfully through the first and second poles, and then worked them very slowly through the third pair, his time being "mm S6sec. He had plenty of noise, but was not too good at forcing. W. L. McKenzie's Nell took her sheep well over the full course, making a good turn to approach the top poles, her time being smin lGsec. J. H. Wright's Don just managed to save the sheep from missing the first poles, negotiated the second, and then, by a good turn, saved a break-away. Approaching the top poles, he forced at a critical time, and ono sheep, leaving its mates, passed below the bottom polo. The time was Smin ssec. Tho following is the result of CLASS 2.—HUNT-AWAY. WITH SLEW; about 500 yards. First prize, £12 and Champion Gold Medal value A3, and Challenge Trophy presented by Messrs Fletcher, Humphreys and Co.; second prize, £5; third prize, _3: fourth prize, £2; fifth prize, £1 and Club's certificates. Time, 9 minutes (10 minutes if halfbred or crossbred sheep are used). Points: Hunt-away 6, under command 10, noise 8, style 6; total, 30 points. H. G. Waters's Bob, C, 10, 8, 6—30. points.
