(Received December 7th, 12.30 a.m.) SYDNEY, "December 6.
In the Assembly, Mr McGowen, when delivering the Budget, called to the fact that the Departmental estimates were prepared before the Government took office, and the short time at their disposal would not allow of any change of policy or reorganisation of finances. All they would do was to modify the expenditure so as to make it meet the diminished revenue for tho financial year. The estimated revenue for the past year was £14,279,927, while the actual receipts amounted to £15,197,750. The expenditure was £14,230,386, or £130,513 in excess of the estimate. The estimated revenue for the current year was £14,393,621, and th© estimated expenditure £14,300,181, leaving a surplus of £93,440. He proposed to levy no additional taxation at present, but during the recess he would seriously consider the question of imposing new taxation, which would be necessary to balance the accounts.
Mr McGowen added it was evident in the light of phenomenal increases in expenditure and the dimunition in the expected Commonwealth returns that a largo deficit would have to bo faced in the near future.
