ANGLING.
At nine o'clock yesterday morning it was reported that tho fishing rivers of Canterbury wero clear, with the exception of tho Rakaia, which was merely fishable.
A party of four, on Saturday, motored out to one of the numerous small lakes, and were rewarded handsomely for their excursion. They landed twelve rainbow trout, ranging from 341b to 6_lb. The encouraging part of the business was that all the anglers were fishing with the fly. An English lady tourist was greatly delighted at grassing six fish on the fly in the same lake, running between <3_lb and 4£lb in weight.
Anglers generally will be glad to learn that the rainbow trout is thriving in theso waters. The catch mentioned above must be about a record .for any catch of rainbow trout ever made in Canterbury.
The Waimakariri has also been giving some good sport. On Friday last a magnificent fish, 21 inches long and weighing 151b, was landed. An experienced angler described it aa a perfect specimen. It was taken with live bait. "Good baskets have been reported from the North branch, Vnd also from tho Hororata.
A party of two spent the week-end at the Rakaia, and were rewarded with three fish, averaging B.lb. The river was not in good condition. The same remark applies to tho Halswell, which is not worth visiting. From all accounts it will not be clear for three or four weeks.
The Rangitata river is at present in splendid fishing condition, and fishermen are meeting with a good deal of success. One night last week two fishermen landed between them 25 fine trout, the largest of the catch turning tho scales at 161b, and the second largest at 101b.
