VIENNA, December 4
The Emperor has .bestowed a gold watch with the Imperial initials in diamonds, on Captain Matthews, of the Lowther Range and binoculars adorned with the Emperor's signature on Captain Andrews, of the tug Dievan- for their work in connection with tho mishap to the Austrian liner Trieste. The first officer and six seamen of the Lowther Range have received monetary awards. The widow of the engineer who was killed, has been awarded 10,000 kronen. Admiral Slade and the Governor of Aden wero specially thanked for their services in the search for the vessel.
The towing to port of the disabled Austrian liner Trieste by the small British "tramp" Lowther Range furnishes one of the finest cases of skill and heroism in the merchant service of recent years. Tho Trieste broke her shaft between Aden and Bombay, and drifted about for some time. She was sighted in heavy weather by tho Lowther Range, and an attempt was at once made to take her in tow. Owing to the heavy sea. the work was most difficult and highly dangerous. After several mishaps, tho "tramp" succeeded in getting the liner within sight of Bombay, where sh e was taken in hand by a tug. The crew of tho Lowther Range had a most trying time. Seas continually swept over tho vessel, and a large proportion of the men wero iniured. One of the engineers was hurled against a winch by a wave and killed.
