CHEVIOT DEPUTATIONS.
(special to "tub pekss.") ; "WELLINGTON, September 5. Mr\J. Meikle, representing a numjber of (Cheviot settlers in occupation of flat lands adjoining tho Mackenzie township, waited on tho Minister of Lands to-day to ask the Government to clear the Jed river of willows and •weeds. Mr Forbes introduce tho deputation, and; Mr George- Witty, M.1 , ., was also present. It was stated that thdre was a Gorcrntnent reserve on both sides of the stream through Lady Campbell's property, but as she was not liable to have it cleared, it had become overgrown, and the stream had flooded the surrounding land. The settlers promised in bear the cost of clearimy in future if tho Government undertook the work none. . The Prime Minister promised to obtain a report on the matter. Subsequently Mr Meiklo waited on the Minister for Public Works with a request for a subsidy towards the cost or repairing the road from the railway to the Waiau bridge, as it had been cut up by the cartage of material for the bridge.
The Hon. R. McKcnsie promised to consider the matter.
