CITY COUNCIL.
The Christchurch City Council met last night, when there wero .present: — The >lavor (Mr C. Alli-.ou). and Crs. W. H. Cooper, T. Gapes, J. Forrester, C. Tavlor. G. W. J. Parsons, J. Hyde. H. Williams, H. J. C. Thacker, H. B. Sorensen. T. N. Horslev, H. J. Otley. A. H. Webb, and C. D. Morris. An apology for absence was received from Cr. J. J. Dougall. Mr B. Olds wrote resigning his position as custodian of the tepid baths
The resignation was accepted, and power was given to the Baths Committee to make an appointment. The secretary of the Canterbury Chamber •of Commerce wrote stating that- the Council of the • Chamber strongly supported the City Council in its endeavour to have the Lake Coleridge supply conserved for the benefit of the city.
Tho letter was received
The secretary of the City and Suburban Burgesses' Association wrote forwarding the following resolution passed by tho Association :—"That owing to the insufficiency of the lighting of the .city at night time, more especially when the moon is obscured, this Ass-G----elation is of the opinion that more extensive use could be made of the Council's electric plant to augment tho Gas Company's system of street lighting. '* ,
'The letter was received
A request from the local tobacconists and hairdressers to tho Minister of Labour to fix the closing hours of tho shops in Christchurch was forwarded for tbe Council's certificate to be attached.
The Council decided to give the certificate.
A deputation was received from Lmwood residents protesting against the alteration of the name of Cambridge street to Hawkins street. The deputation was headed by Mr H. Pearce, who _aid that residents in tho street wero almost unanimous in favour of the retention of the name of Cambridge street, which was named after the native place of tho first resident in the street.
Tho Council referred tho matter to tho By-laws Committee to report at the next meeting. Tbe Works Committee reported that the Amalgamated Society of Engineers had forwarded a copy of the general conditions and hours of labour, wages, etc.. in connection with the engineering and allied trades for the Council's consideration. and the committee recommended that no action be taken.
Tho report was adopted. " The Water Supply Committee reported having considered a letter from tho Christchurch Fire Board in reference to the system of marking the position of the street hydrants, and instructed the city surveyor to make a trial of glazed tiles in the kerb in about twenty positions, and ascertain the cost of same; also to make a trial of marking the kerbs with white paint in a number of places. Mr T. Danks, on behalf of the licensed plumbers, had written to the Committee stating that unqualified persons had been doing work in connection with the high pressure water supply without obtaining permission or obtaining a license from the Council. The committee replied stating that several .prosecutions for breaches of the water supply by-law had already been instituted, and that any "unauthorised person found making connection with the high pressure water supply would be similarly dealt with. Tho report was adopted.
