TERRITORIAL NOTES.

Now that the recess in connection with the death of King Edward VII. is over, local corps will resume their ordinary work. This evening the Drillshedt will again be occupied with recruit drill. With such a. largo number of recruits from all companies, the instructional staff will have? a real hard time licking them into shape. Some years ago, when there wns a rush of recruits, a number of company noncoms, came forward to assist the instructional staff. This is a precedent j that may well be followed for tne next ] few months, as while it would ©as© tho I work of the instructional staff, it would perfect tho non-coms, in their knowledge of their duties. At present there is considerable excitement in all the Territorial Uis tricts over the new appointments to the Territorial Force. From Canterbury there are, it is uiidexstood, a. large number of applications for positions, many officers evidently preferring the Government Service to that if private employers. One of the principal factors in tho appointments will ne««sarily be tactical fitness for command. Old Canterbury volunteers will be glad to hear that Staff-Sergeant-Majjr CoUsuian is meeting with groat success iv his work in the Auckland district. So highly is his work thought of that at tho close of tho last camp of the Second Regiment Auckland Mounted Rifles, a presentation of a gold watch and a sword was made 10 him by the officers, non-ooiuniissioncrl officers, and men. Jn asking ColoiW Wolfe, the officer commanding the Auckland district, to niako the presentation, Colonel Allen Bell tho matter of the new appointments, and expressed tho hope that SergeantMajor Coleman's work would bo considered when the • promotions woro made. Colonel Wolfe, in making tho presentation, spoko very highly of Sergeant-Major Coleman's work as an instructor. The major commanding the Canterbury Engineers has not remained long in doubt, Cnptain Jones receiving his commission as major, and Lieutenant Andrews as captain. The Christchurch Rifle Club fired on Saturdny at Ca-shmero for tho "Dni'y Mail" Empire Challonge Cup. This year teams had the option of firing either on Saturday last or Empire Day Tho eight highest of tlie Christchurch Club averaged 87 points per man, tho best score (03) boinft put up by the e\--Opaki clwmpion, W. J. Hbnry, C M. Wr.lker 90. J. Gray. 87, E. P. Knndford 86, L. V White 86, S. W. Los tor 86, C. Scott So, and H. Reynolds S3. Total 696. Eleven men fired. The Lincoln Rifie Club will hold its annual ball and presentation of prizes in the Druids' Hall, Lincoln, on June 3rd. S. W. Lester, at ono time one-of the Canterbury crack shots, has taken up shooting again tin's year. From pre-sc-nt appearances he does not appear to have lost much of his old skill. In. the list of parade statos r.t Friday's memorial service it was inadvertently stated that Lieut.-Colonel ■Surgeon Clayton was on tho Active Unattached List, whereas it should have been stated that he was on the Medical Staff, being P.M.O. A late Gazette notifies tho resignation of Lieut. L. P. White of the Christchurch Cycling and Signalling Corps. Tho period of mourning; among thi Territorials will extend for six months, during which time all officers will wear a band of black crepo round their left arm. .' \ . Lieut.-Colonel Rhodes (Officer Commanding the First North Canterbury Mounted Regiment) and Captains ■Meddings and Luttrell were among the District Staff at the memorial parado on Friday. The appointments of Lieut. G. W. Braddell (Canterbury Scouts) and Lieut. E. H. Orr (Ashburton Mounted Rifles) are gazetted. The Civil Service Rifles were, owing to the returns not all being handed in immediately after the parade, omitted from tho list of the parade states at Friday's function. They were in charge of Captain Nicholls, and their strength was twenty. The Territorials will parade on tho evening of next Monday in connection with the farewell function to the Governor. The Canterbury t Mounted Rifles will furnish the escort, and the guard of honour will, be supplied by the No. 1 North Canterbury Infantry Battalion. A large number of medals will be presented at the parade. Tho C.M.R. will also supply the escort for the levee to the Governor on the 31st.
