SHIPPING NOTES.
Although the day was a close holiday on tho wharves, and no cargo was worked, tho' pilot staff was astir from.s a.m. yesterday, and had a busy morning. First to arrive waa tho Tyser Line steamer Indralema, from 'New York via way ports, and she waa berthed at No. 3 wharf.. The Shaw, Savill and Albion Company-) steamer Kangatira, wSich ia on tbe loading berth, arrived shortly after _ 8 o'clock, and berthed at) No. 7 whaif. Tihc. Union Company's largo steamer Aparima, from Calcutta, via way ports, arrived two hours later, and was berthed at No. 3 wharf. The Fed eral-Houlder- Shire line* Drayton Grange, from. Liverpool, via, way ports, loft Wellington at 7 a.m. yesterday, and was expected to anchor in the streanl hero during, the night. Other arrivals yesterday wore tho Kini, from Westport, with coal nnd timber, and the Kaitangata, from Greymouth, with a similar cargo, and the Mararoa and Arapawa, from Wellington. The Westport Coal Company's collier Canopus was duo in about 4 o'clock this morning, with a full load of coal from Westport. The port will be unusually busy to-day, as in addition, to large oversea steamexs, there will bo eeven other steamers and ■ eight sailing vessels at-work. It has been decided that the new service of ten largo twin-screw steamers, built for Messrs Houldcr Bros,, owners of the wellknown "Grange" line, shall bo styled . the "Transport" line, and each vessel will bo' named after a British possession. Tho' steamers already launched and christened,«ro: —Australian Transport, British Transport, Canadian Transport, Capo Tiransport, Empiro Transport, Indian Transport, and Natal Transport, all twin-screw steamers, averaging 10,000 tons. Last Tuesday week: tho owners took delivery of the first vessel of tho new lino —the Indian Transport, and she will b© ready to sail in a few weeks. It is stated that tho building contracts wero distributed among several firms, and tbe work of construction was carried on simultaneously at different centres. -..'.;. It is reported that, Captain Chicken, late of the Nairnshire, is now in command of the Shire Line steamer Ayrshire. According to the "Otago Daily-Times " of Thursday, the arrangements for the discharge of the Delphic havo been altered owing to the pressing demands by meat freezing companies to get cargoes away. The Delphic waa duo lo reach Wellington from Napier yesterday, and at the former port she will tranship her Lyttelton nnd Otago cargo. From Wellington sho will go to Picton, and then to Lyttelton, and back to Wellington, her final .>ort, which sho will leave on the 31st inst. . «.. The new .7000 ton Indra Line steamer, which is being, built for the London-Aus-tralia-New Zealand trade, and which will run under the auspices of the Tyser Line, will be ready in September. She is to be named Indrabarah. *,- ■ The Timaru Harbour Board's dredge No. 350, has gone into dock at Port Chalmers, to
have a new- tumbler shaft fitted nnd for overhaul. On hex way back she will stop *-t Oaniimt to dredge for the* Board there, returning to Tim-tru in J-ly. It is understood' that negotiations between tho Trn__ru Harbour Board nnd tho owr-crs of tho Lyttelton ste«nicr Purau for tho hire of Unit vessel for towing- purposes have not yet been completed. Thero was a lipht south-west wind blowing yesterday morning, and tho barque' Hazel Craiff got under way at 8.30 aan., and set sail for lf.lensville. After disclmrging her cargo of jM-oduco the vessel will load timber at Kaipara for Sydney.
