SPORTING.
NOTES. The secretary of the Canterbury Park Trotting Club takes acceptances for the first day of his Club's Winter Meeting unto 8 o'clock this evening. Nominations for the Hawke's Bay J.C.s Winter Meeting close to-night. Acceptances for the South Canterbury Trotting Club's Autumn Meeting aro also due this.evening. The celebrated' sire Soult, who die I in Auckland last week, was insured for £000. Of 904 horses entered for the Melbourne Cup during live years past, only 115 faced the barrier. Tho interesting fact is mentioned by an English writer that when Lord Seymour, an Englishman, introduced racing in France in 1833, only 30 hors-s were registered under the rules. Last year 2195 horses raced under the rules of tho Societe d'Encouragement. Reports from Melbourne state that the New ,Zealand-bred Nobel (Seaton Delaval —Problem);has. been fired, and will be treated to a lengthy spell. Though a disappointing performer in the Dominion, Nobel showed promise when taken over to the other side, and may yet win a race there. The London "Sportsman" says that the New Zealander,. Mr Spencer Gollan, is, one of the best sportsmen ia existence, but his heart is not in flat racine, for he shows hilt small interest in his stable, and seems to care little or nothing whether his horses win or not. Tiripapa, as the Tiraillerie colt is now. named, must have cost him a small fortune in forfeits, and has never won a race, but this does not seem te have disturbed Mr Gollan in the slightest. At a meeting held at Palmerston North on Thursday night, a trotting club was formed, with * prospective membership of two hundred.
