Actason, and he witnessed during his long career the transition from the "wooden walls" of Nelson's time to the great floating forts of steel which are th« battleships of to-day. MR HAY SMITH. In recent years no farmer on Kaiapor Island was better known or more sincerely respected than Mr Hay Smith, whose death took place yesterday, after a few week's illness, during which he underwent a serious operation. He was a .native of Crmlcn, in Abcrdeonshiro, and his age was about sixty-eight. Mr Smith, who remained a. bachelor, arrived in Canterbury by the ship Metropolis iorty-pjglit years' ago. Being possessed of energy and determination, Mr Smith gained some experience with the lato Mr John 'Stevenson at Flaiton and with Messrs Bclchnr and Fairveathor, and then rented some of the Church of England Estate.
