LAUNCESTON, May 20. Mr Clemppt Wragge reports m a k*og a careful observation of the comtit's transit with a special solar telescope. The only indication of tho transit was tho display of auroral or magnetic glare all round the solar edge and the sm*r light was slighty misty. Whije the observations were in progress a niagnlficent group of sojar storms wns witnessed Mr Wraggo adds that his observations showed that the nucleus of the com at is not solid, but an aggregation of cosmical electrons in violent motion, repelled outwards by the pressuro of solar light, thu§ forming a tenuous, tail. '■■'"-■ The barometric pressuro was perfectly steady, but the compass needle seemed to quiver slightly, and electrical storm*"* may yet bo hoard of. Reverting to tho storm w-itpessed in the.sun, Mr Wragge says the conditions aro favourable to further '-earthquake and volcanic action in regions of seisniic activity. (fress association telegbams.) WANGANUI, May 20. A keen watch was kept upon Halley's comet at the Wanganui Observatory, which possesses one of the finest telescopes in the Southern Hemisphere. Though there were intervals* of clopdlessness during the period when the comet was passing the sun s disc, no trace of it could be seen.
