SECONDARY SCHOOLS CONFERENCE.
(PRIS3 ASSOCIATION TZMCGIIAIf.) WELLINGTON, May 18. At the biennial conference of secondary schools to-day, Mr H. J. I>. Mahon, of Auckland, read a paper entitled, "Secondary Education in New Zealand and Elsewhere."
On the motion of Mr Mahon, it was decideel that provision should be mado in university scholarship papers in chemistry for elementary physical measurements : also that provision be made for questions to test candidates' laboratory work.
On the motion of Mr Laing, Christchurch, it was resolved to recommend the Senate to revise tho programmes of work in the physical and chemical ,-cience entrance examinations, with the object of securing greater continuity in the higher work. Miss McLean ("Wellington) moved, and it was agreed to: —"That it be a recommendation to thc Education Boarels that the holders of Boards' scholarships should attend the recognised school boareling-houses, or approved houses, also that scholarships, where boarding is necessary, should be of a full boarding value of £10."
Mr T. D. Pearce (Southland) moved: —''That the timo for the arithmetic paper, both in the senior free plaoo and in the junior Civil Service examinations, is too short, and should be raised from two to three hours." Mr Morrcll moved an amenelment, statirm that the paper in question is too long for the timo, and should bo shortened. The amendment was carried.
