now too -tvell knovrn to require recapitulation, but it has enlarged the ficopo of its work in tlie following ways:— Sab-br-rxhes have been formed at Tcmuka i-'./l Geraldine, where Sistec- Alice pays ir*utWy vL«its. At their n.inguratron sli<* gave lectures ond practical demonstrations for the assistance of parents. Con-sidering tlie short timo these hranches have been in existence the proa-ess made by th'?in is vf-ry satlsfactorv-. and the o_mni'ttw are to be <-ongrat'ulat<-<l on the results. Other c•■■intrv cases avail thcm-elves largely ot the Society's services by seeking adviop tliiough correspondence, and this has n',w Ix-eome a spwial feature of the work. Many copies of the ramphlet h-ve also been sent out by reo,in*st, and have been found very u.-eful. SPECIAL EXTENSION" OF LECTURES. Si-stcr Alice also delivered i course of lectures at. the Technical School, for which she was given n tt'-tiniinial. to prove how interesting and instructive sho had made them. She i.s to be congratui.ited on being the first Plunket mirso to undertake work of tins kind, and it is encouraging to note thc- success with which her effoi Is have been crowned. The question dealt with was the healthy monagfincnt of the hoi::-* .and children, and as .she has ii'-on asked to repeat tlie ccurse, with tlie addition of a clutvs lor girls hetw<**n the aires of 18 and 22. wo Jiope that tho nucleus of a school for mothers has been formed. Wo should like to bring hpfore the notice of the members that these side lines are possible to thi.s braiici. only through tho generosity and unusual Ireturing capabilities of iS'stor Alict* hereelf, who voluntarily sacrifices ?<: large _ joart of her own time on behalf o»' the "Society, as r.uch work is in nn way included it; her professional duties. The statistics of -the regular work of Sister Alice ore as follows:— Numb-T of cases during year, 2_"0; vi-sits paid by nurse to homes of patients, 2930; visits made by patients or their representatives to the office, 4o0; visits paid to country patients, 50; letters written, 80. FOUXDIXG OF INVERCARGILL CENTRE. In "March the 17uiiedin Committoe reouested permission for our nurse to deliver a course of lectures in Southland, and she was instrumental in a branch being opened' at Invercargill. D-uring her absence Nurse "Murray was appointed to do her work, and she filled tho position very capably. The committee feels that it is now on excellent opportunity to express its appreciation of Sister Alice's services, which are so full of disinterested zeal, and it earnestly lopes that she will be long among them to push forward the work which she has so much at heart. On November 18th a garden party was held at "FaiUi.'' in aid of the Society, which was unfortunately much spoilt by a deluge of'rain. In spite of the weather, however, the energy of the stallholders and assistants was such that a net profit of £91 was realised. Many thanks aro due to oil who helped. ' In February tho committee was approached by tho St. John Ambulance Society, -suggesting that they should go in with them in the annual "Collection Saturday." x Tho offter was accepted, and the net proceeds, which amounted to £123 Is 9d, were equally divided. ANNUAL CONFERENCE. • In March tho Society's annual conference was hold in Dunedin, which Mrs Baumber and Mrs Smithson attended as delegates. It proved to be a most instructive.andisuccessful meeting, and much important business, was transacted. On April oth Dr. Truby King delivered an interesting and practi<„l lecture, illustrated by lantern slides. The attendance was good, and tho trouble to which the lecturer put himself was much appreciated in Tim-ru. His subject was the possibility to all of of obtaining perfect health, and he pointed'out the all-importance of fresh air, exerciso, and the correct feeding and treatment of infants. He also laid great stress on tho disastrous results of the "dummy" and bad feeding on children's teeth, which should specially appeal to thc inhabitants of New Zealand, where imperfect teeth were so general. Financially, the Society has been greatf ly helped by a subsidy of £o0 which was gtanted by the Government. '■■'.-' STRONG MUNICIPAL AND PRI7. VATE SUPPORT.. Thanks are due to the Mayor and councillors, who helped considerably, both financially and by the monthly use of their chambers, towards establishing this branch; also to those who gave donations, for which we hope in future not to havo to appeal, as the committee feel more and more strongly that the work should bo supported *by the whole community and not by the few. We also wish to thank Messrs Buxton and Carl, of Temuka, and Mr Williams, of Geraldine, for the kind Use of their rooms. The committee wish also' to heartily thank the Adyisorv Board for its attention and help, and the editors of the newspapers for their consistent and strong support. In conclusion, the committee vishes to express its hope that the public will realise the benefits which, the Society is conferring on the Dominion ot large, and that the present support will continue to be extended. The Treasurer (Mrs M. Raymond) read the balance-sheet, which showed: —Receipts—Subscriptions and donations, £153 Is; woceeds of garden party, £91 lis 6d; proceeds Temuki garden party, 16s; Government grant, £50; leaflets, 7d; interest Post Office Bank, 10s lOd—totnl. £295 19s lid. Expenditure—salary to Sister Alice (fourteen month-*,' services), £135 8s 4d : tc.al, with numerous necessary expenses; £177 os lOd. The balance-to the Society's credit in the Post Office bank is £118 14s Id. CONFIDENT OUTLOOK. Mr F. J. Rolleston said it gave him very great pleasure as an outsider to congratulate tlie officers and members of the Society on the very satisfactory report and balance-sheet that" had been presented. He did not think that one should judge tho work of the Society by the actual results in poinds, shillings, and pence; but still the fact of so satisfactory a result was a matter for congratulation, because without money the work of the Society would be very .much crippled. The amazing progress made by the.Society uas due to the energy of the officers *of the Society and the devotion and untiring work of the Plunket nurse. (Applause.) As long as the Society had officers with tho same zeal as the present ones, and a nurse with such devotion, there need be no fear of the Society's future.
