CHRISTCHURCH SPORTS CLUB.

♦• BOXING TOURNAMENT. The Christchurch Sports Club held the first tournament of the season in the Theatre Ro>al last evening. There | was a good a-tendance, though tho stalls Vind dress circle wero not so well i patronised as usual. The programme j consisted of live amateur bouts and a | professional contest for the .heavy-j weight championship of Sew Zealand** (fifteen rounds). The referee was Mr R. Cooke, and the judges Messrs H. E. Marsh and W. J. Moir. The following were- tlie results: — AVELTER WEIGHT NOVICE (ihree rounds ot two minute, each) —First round: J. Thompson, lOst 7.1b (Christchurch) beat S. M. Anderson, lOst 7_lb (Belfast). The pace ■wan made warm from tho start. Thompson made very effective use of his right, swinging and upper cutting frequently. Anderson went out to' v right swing early in the third. S;cond round: Blackburn, lOst 9lb (Christchurch) beat li. Rickards, lOst B_lb (Christchurch). This.was a much better exhibition, though Blackburn, vd_o had the advantage o£ inches and reach, easily beat his opponent on points. Final: The final between Thompson and Blackburn provided an exciting contest. Blackburn again had tho advantage of height ond reach, and Thompson found some difficulty in getting inside. He landed somo very effective straight rights, and in the third round? had : the best of it. Tho gq_g saved 'Blackburn ftom 'fi''„_oo_-out, and tho award ] went to Thompson. MIDDLE-WEIGHT (three rounds of three minutes ench) —L. Cade, list 31b (Christchurch) beat tt. -M-rqtiet. list 31b (Sumner). Marquet had decidedly the best of the first two rounds, his superior height and reach serving him well. Cade led in the next round, r.nd recovered, lost points. An extra twominute round was ordered, and this was very evenly fought. The verdict went to the Sumner man. . HEAVY-WEIGHT (three rounds of ' two minute, ench)—O. Ballin, 12st 3lb (Christchurch) beat T. Wrenn. 13st 101b (Sumner). Tin's wa.s a/ rather disappointing contest. Bnllin did nil the: leading, and waa easily the winner on points. HEAVY - WEIGHT PROFESSIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP (fifteen rounds)—ln this contest E. .T. Picton (Christchurch) met C. Herbert. (Onmaru. lato of Australia). Tlie local man rcaled 138t. while Herbert drew only list .">lb. The contest was a remarkably even one. Herbert was tailor and more active than his' opponent, and was _lso cleverer aa a boxer.
