CO-PARTNERY SCHEME.
(kro.i Ot'R owv CORRIW-OXnF.XT.) ' LONDON. April 8. The men employed at Irvine's si„pyard at Hartlepool have votc<l against tli-* continuation of .Sir Christop.ier Furiicss'.s co-rpartnerj" scheme. The ballot resulted :—For continuance 492, against 593. Enquiries among the wor__en show that the main cause of tlie opposition is.that such irregularity of work has arisen as to furnish anything but a full year's employment for most of the men, and that the lower-paid workmen, when they have been laid idle, have felt the need of even the few shillings they may have accumulated towards the shares. It is also stated
I that the co-partners are unable, to oh- ' tain employment iv other, local . yards ov.-ing to the attitude of-the men at I those yards, and. moreover, the opinion S seems to have gained hold that the I scheme would act to the disadvantage Jof the trades union at a time of crisis. ! When interviewed, Sir Christopher iFiirncss said:—"l understand there is j a /strong desire to give the co-partner-j ship arrangement another twelve months' trial. Tnere can be no doubt as to the feeling of the firm's -workmen jif they are left free to act apart from 1 the other members of the tra<les unions with which they are connected."
