C Adams, Chairman of the Canterbury College Board of Governors, while in Wellington to-day saw Sir Joseph Ward regarding a grant of £400 promised by tho Government to tho Canterbury Museurii some time back. Sir Joseph said lie would look into the matter, and if he found the promise was for an unconditional grant, it would bo made. Mr R. Heaton Rhodes, M.P., brought under the notice of the Prime Minister a matter of finance in connection with the road and wharf. at DuvHuehelle Bay, Akaroa. The work, he said, had exhausted tlie amount obtained under the Loans to Local Bodies Act, but if the local authority could get another 10 per cent, (which would be £200) from the Government, ibere would ba no necessity to take another poll of tho ratepayers. On application to the State Guarantee Ad\&nces Department, however, the local authority was told that the Department had no power to let them have this money. This means thnt they consider the Act retrospective, which Mr. Rhodes maintained the Kouso _of Representatives never intended Sir Joseph Ward promised to take the opinion of tho Crown law officers, and if it were possible to do so, he would jet the local body havo ih. amount needed for the completion of the work.
