NEGRO CONVICTS' TERRIBLE FATE. INHUMANITY OF GUARDS. United Press Association—By Electrio Telegraph—Copyright. (Received May 19rh. 11.30 p.m.) NEW YORlv, Mr.y 18. Details of the disaster at Centreville, Alabama, as a result of which thirtyfive negro convicts were burned to death, show that tho convicts had been leased by tho State to the Red Feather Coal Company, and were confined in a largo stockade unclor armed guards. A negro applied a match to the stockade, hoping to escape in the confusion. The convicts tried to rush through tho firo, but tho guards shot one of them, and the others, appalled, huddled back in tho stockade. As the flames encroached on them another dash for safety was made and another volley fired, which' wounded several of the convict 3.. Many were burnt tr. death whilo struggling through the blazing timbers. . Gruesome details arc given of tho blasphemous shrieks and the writhing of tho convicts in the death trap. Thirty-fivo wero burned to death, several were shot, and many wero wounded.
