LABOUR EXCHANGES.
PROGRESS OF THE SCHEME. United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, May 17. In April thero were 116,523 applications for work at the Labour Exchanges, and 23,858 vacancies were rilled. Mr Buxton, President of tho Board of Trade, gave the first official figures in connection with the Labour Exchanges two months ago. They wero:—Total registrations 270,000, number then on the registers 104,000. vacancies notified 32,500, places filled 19,907. Mr Buxton accounted for the small number of situations which had been found for the applicants by saying tho reason why tho others wero not filled was because the managers of the exchanges were extremely anxious to start slowly but well, and not to supply a man to a place for which be was not suitable He also /suggested that .thousands of men must, have been put in the! way of. finding ■ workj as they had returned thoir registration cards through the post. Tho "Daily Express published figures showing that in London less than 5 per cent, of those.wHo applied for situations obtained work. The eitimated cost of the system for tbe first year is £220,000. ,
