The water was running down the main stieefc at a great rate. The lower parts- of the town were rapidly submerged. Most of the shops in ttte--niain street were flooded, and thft -.. . houses in Rye lane, Puke and Jnnction roads were "more or lees flooded. .. . Bates burst over Taranaki early this morning with cyclonic fury, destruction in all directions marking the visitation.
