*. Mr T. A. B. Bailey, S.M.. presided at the Magistrate's Court yesterday. Two first offenders for drunkenness were each fin?d os and costs, in default 21 hours' imprisonment, and Jas. Wallace, » second olfender, was fined 10s and costs, in default 48 hours' imprisonment. May Kerr. 11, who was tound on Mcssre Baker Bros. 5 premises without lawful excuse, was charged with being a rogue and a vagabond. She was sentenced to six months' imprisonment, v. ith the option of going to the -Samaritan Home. Chas. Ronald McPherson was" remanded until Wednesday on charges of breaking, entering and theft from the Church of Christ and the Spiritualists' Church. Alfred James Cox and Harold Richard Peard, two lads, were charged on thre. informations with having stolen bicycles. Mr Frazer appeared for accused. They were remanded until Friday. Bail was allowed. Geo. S. Coppin, a prohibited person, who had procured liquor, was fined _0s and cost,. Andrew Wilson (Mr Leathern) pleaded "Not guilty" to a charge of, on February 3rd, stealing a silver watch, a gold tie pin, a fishing line, reel, and a quantity of clothing valued at £5, the property of Arthur Stacc. After hearing the evidence the Magistrate convicted accused and nominally sentenced him to fourteen days' imprisonment. Jn the meantime hs* would recommend the Governor to transfer him to an Industrial School. Victor Smith, Geo. Souter, and Edgar Mooro pleaded "Guilty" to sti-aling £5, the property of Samuel Archbold. The Chief Detective said that tho complainant bad a slot machine, the lock of which was broken by accused. They said they would replace it, and purchased another lock with duplicate keys, which they retained. They were thus enabled to help themselves at any time to the cash. Trie, could not make out where the money was going to. The Magistrate dismissed the charge against Smith, who was a juvenile, and ordered the other two to couio up for sentence when called upon. The accused agreed to refund the £5. Chas. Hanson was charged with unlawfully assaulting Lavinia Isaacs, his daughter. The Magistrate convicted and discharged him. Robt. Lindsay and Cha6. St. Merat were each fined 7s and costs for riding bicycles on footpaths. Wm. Bisman was fined 10s and costs for cycling at night without a light. Henry Sweney and Geo. Montague Butterworth (Mr .Vilding) were convicted and discharged for similar offences. Wm. Edgar was fined 7s and costs for driving a vehicle at night without lights. C. V. M. Broad and Wm. B. Hutchinson were each fined 5s and Chas. Jas. Jones, B. A. McKeown, and David Miller 10s for driving too fast over crossings. Harold Bowen was fined 40s and costs for driving a motor-cer at a speed dangerous to the public. Edward Bates was convicted and ordered to pay the costs of the prosecution for leaving a cab unattended. Charlie July was fined 5s and costs for leaving his cart unattended in a publio place. Wm. Faas was fined a similar amount for allowing a horse to wander. Geo. Vincent, Wm. Vincent, aud Steven Cane were each fined 20s and cost, for cruelty to a mule. ltobt. Trewin Meaclem was fined 20s and costs for using obscene language. John Young, Albert Parker, Herbert Halligan, and Alfred Pedler were charged with behaving in a manner calculated to provoke a breach of the peace. On the application of the police the case was adjourned till April 15th. Wm. Terris was fined 10s and costs for failing to close his shop on a statutory half-holiday. Ernest A. Akins (Mr Cunningham) was charged'-_y th(« City Council (Mr Atpers) with using water for his garden from the municipal suppljr without having it -supplied by meter. A fine of 5s and costs "was imposed.
