KNOX CHURCH.
In the schoolroom of Knox Church; Bealej , avenue, yesterday afternoon, a salo'of work was opened, the proceeds of which are to be devoted towards the extinction of the debt of the church. The schoolroom presented a very attractive appearance, all the stalls being ; 'prettily decorated. In some instances novel ideas tfere carried out, and the -•'■ fiower stall was especially attractive. There was a large attendance at the opening ceremony The- Rev. Dr. Envin, prior to calling Tiw>n the/ Ma.vor to formally open the «ale,/said the work in,the stalls TepimMited a larp;e amount of effort ■;• by,".»' large number of workers. As minister of the congregation it was not, perhaps, for him to mention any par- ■ ticular names, tmi there waa one that he could mention without in-' ■'. vidknaness. The idea of t'he sale ,"• 01, fork .originated with Mrs - Daridson, and it was their regret that she was not therr to see the result of her suggestion as presented in the poods exhibited for sale. They all knew hovf' earnestly Mrs Davidson wrought right up to the very last to make the effort a success, and they all appreciated that effort. . Tho Mayor (Mr €. Allison), who was received with applause, said that he had felt much honoured at tho.request of the committee to oyen the sale of .work. After reference to the social results that flow from the co-operation of church workers in promoting such a function, he said that it was not altogether an unmixed evil for a church to be in debt, as it gave the church member* something to r ' work for and gave opportunities, .the present one, to bring them into" close touch one with the other. ' He /understood that at present the chij»h wee hv debt to the extent of £1530, and that tfie -wesent effort. had been euggested by ihe Band of Hope • connected with the church, A sum of £100 2s hed : been raised, jyartly by tneana of jumble sales, and of this •mount £50 had , been ; appropriated to- ' w*rd« ihe extinction of ; tho debt on the; clnirch: Iα declaring the salo of . work' open, hlelWbrehip expressed tho hope that it; Would be successful, and w<raH be the forerunner of equally eucccwful, functions, until ultimately the debt waa liquidated.- .
