SHAM FIGHT.

Tho Kaiapoi and Rangiora Rifles on Saturday held a sham fight on the country "between Flarton and the North road. Each corps left its headquarters at 1.30. The Rangiora company, thirty strong, under Captain B. S. Jordan, cycled to the Flaxton railway station, where the machines wero left while the riflemen searched for an opportunity to reach the neighbourhood of the Woollen Mills. The Kaiapoi company made the Beach road its base, and had • thirty-five of all ranks, the officers being Captain T. A. Gates (in command) and Lieutenants Conlan and Edwards. After the bugles sounded cease fire, Colonel Hawkins criticised the work done. which he praised for the keenness displayed, but pointed out that the defenders had taken too wide a front and the attackers had attempted in a somewhat hazardous manner to cross tho zone of fire, which could have been poured in on them. He thanked officers and men for the turn-out.
