PROPOSED MAORI MOUNTED COMPANY.
The movement to form c Maori mounted! rifle coinftauy for the Canterbury district is making good progress. A meeting at Tuahiwi, Kaiapoi, brought forward thirty-seven candidates for the corps, and at a meeting held last Friday at Little River, at which Captain "W- Uru was present, about thirty names were given in. Meetings at Taumutu, Rapaki, and Port Levy are expected to augment the list of Maoris offering their services. Itis anticipated that about 84 members will be obtained'- Should their services be accepted, it is proposed to hold the first camp of the Maori comjpany at Little River, and' the next at Kaiapoi. Dismounted, drill will be held where halls can be obtained aa drill sheds.
