SCARGILL.
The fortnightly meeting of tho Mutual Improvement Society was held on October Ist. There was a good attendance, and Mr H. J. Pannett occupied tho chair. Tho evening was devoted to a recitation competition. Tho competitors were:—Miss Edith Pannett, Mrs D. Cameron, 'Messrs C. Holland. B. Gibb, T. Brown, and C. Stewart. On a vote being taken, Miss E. Pannett was declared the winner. Readings were given by Messrs G. and H. Pannett and T. E. L. Roberts. It w.-is decided to hold an essay competition, at the next meeting.
