CANTERBURY AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIPS.
The first rounds of the Canterbxiry boxing championships, hold under-the auspices of the Christehurch Sports Club were got off at the Theatre Royal last night in the presence of a fair number of spectators. The sport provided, on the whole, was gooa, several of tno bouts producing capital displays ot science. , , , The evening's ice was broken by * pair of flappers who boxed strictly according to the rule book. During the proceedings Jim Griffin boxed throe exhibition rounds with J. Cross, a wellknown local amateur, and succeeded in providing a considerable amount or amusement. The following are the results of the evening's (three-round) bouts:— , , Bant-m Weight.-D. Midgley, Chnetcliurch (FJst 3J b) v. M. O'Con.e.l. Riccarton (Bst SJlb). Parker, Christchurch (Bet 8ilb). Neliigan, displaying fine footwork, made the pace throughout, and won handsomely. Feather Weight— J. Higgina, Dunedin (Bst 10 b) v. H. WLson, Chrietchurch (Bet 12jlb). Wilson was knocked out in the first round. Light Weighfr-J. Morrissey Chrietchurch (9et 12lb) v. J. Fulton, Dunedin (9»t 12JlbJ. Fulton drew a careful bead on his opponent and of a considerable quantity of assault and bittery despatched promiscuously th« Christchurch representative collected more than a fair share. In the last round Morristey w&e necking a- knock-out -with considerable fixity of purpose, but eought in vain, and Fulton, who foujrht sturdily all tfye way, won on points. W. Page, Ashburtoti (Set 121b) v. A. Thomson, Christchurch (Oat 121b). This wm an evenly matched pair. Page showed excellent footwork, but in oiher points of the game Thomson gained a verdict by a- small margin. Middle Weight.—L. Cade, Christchurch (list 2b) v. A. Osrbstt, Athburton (Hat 21b). Thie was a workmanlike pair, who handed out green goods with a lavish fist. Cade succeeding in catching the judge's eye and incidentally hie opponent's, once or twice. O. Kingscotc, Chrietchurch (list 2Jlb) v. G. MntT-ewson, Dunedin (lOet 121b). The iou.herr.er went out in the first round.
Heavy W-ight.—P. Riston, Dunedin (12st 4b) v. J. Shaw, Chriptcburch (12st). Raeton did most, of the leading and put a number of pointed questions to which Bhaw_.w*a unable to furni'h en anewer.
