BRIGANTINE IN DISTRESS.
(PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) AUCKLAND, July 5. Tho steamer Awaroa. which left Kaipara for Auckland towing the brigantine Defiance, encountered a galo of hurricane force on Friday morning. She was helpless rolling in the trough of the sea. Both vessels were being driven ashore, and the hawser had to be slipped, leaving tho Defiance to her own resources. After sheltering at Motupia the Awaroa reached Auckland yesterday. The Defiance had a good spread of canvas, and was well provisioned. It is expected she would get clear of danger safely.
