The. impact flooded the ©nginp room, and the Whakatane commenced to settle down, but was kept afloat with the assistance of tugs. Meanwhile the Circe brought the Whakatane. passengers to Dover. These, with mails and valuable stud horses, will be transferred to another of the same company's liners.

The Whakatane was towed to Dover., and was beached there. She appeared to be badly down by the stern. All the crew were mustered in tho fore part. All the damage is below the water-line.
