Messrs H. Quano and Wilfrid HaM, who went to Wellington to give evidence before the Parliamentary Committee regarding the railway rates between Lyttelton and Christchuroh, returned yesterday.
Dr. Brad_haw returned to Christchurch yesterday from Dunedin. Mr L. M. Isitt loft for "Wellington by the Mararoa last night. Tho appointment cf Lieut. James Hervey Price, Royal Marines (retired half pay), as superintending officer for the construction of fortifications in New Zealand, is announced. Among tho arrivals in town yesterday were:—Mr A. ' _■ Colonel Robin, C.8., First Officer of the Defence Council, is in Christchurch. Yesterday, in company with Colonel Hawkins, ho witnessed a parade of school cadets in Cranmer square, which was held in preparation for to-morrow's review. Mr "Walter Hill, chairman of tho Christchurch Drainage Board, who has been on a visit to Great Britain and Ireland, has left on his return pasage, and arrives in the Dominion next month by the New Zealand Shipping Company's steamer P_paro_. Tho very many in this city wlio are interested in St. John Ambulance Association matters, will regret to learn that Mr William F. Hilson, who has been secretary- °*" the Association for the past three years, has tendered his resignation of his position to tho Council of tho Association, which hos accepted it. Pressure oF other work has been responsible for Mr Hilson's action. During the period he has been secretary, Mr j Hilson has thrown himself heait and scul into the multifarious duties connected with tlio position. The enthusiasm shown by him has been largely responsible for tho very great progress made by tlie Association, as shown by tho fact that when he took up the position there were between one hundred to two hundred persons Attending the different classes held under the Association-- auspices in Canterbury, whereas tho number now attending these classes is between 1200 and 1590. Mr F. Oxley, late of the Christcliurch 3leat Coo—7>a_y's Pictan branch, has joined the staff of the Bank of New Zealand at Mangaweka. On Thursday morning Mr E. Herring, of Papauui, but who resided in the- Ashburton county for many years as the owner of the Alford estate, received a cablo message from Homo from his son, Mr P. T. Herring, intimating that he had been appointed to the Chair of Physiology at" St. Andrew's University. , Mr A. L. D. Fraser, M.P. for Napier, loft Wellington last evening for Wyndham, where he is to be entertained at a banquet by local residents on Monday evening in connection with his resistance of tho Mcikle Acquittal Bill. The Rev. C. H. Moreland (headmaster of Christ's College Grammar School)
and Mrs Moreland'were entertained at the College last evening at a social iiathering, over which Mr Duncan Rutherford, President of tho Old Boys' Association, presided. Various toasts were proposed, including that of the health of the bride and bridegroom, and altogether a most enjoyablo evening was spent.
