HOSPITAL BOARD.
Tho North Canterbury Hospital Board met on Wednesday. Present— Messrs jPayling (chairman), Dunlop, Wolfe, W'iiiny, Storry, jJavison. Horrell, Ingram, Morris, Allison, a-tid Gapes. 'Mm Oxford Road i Board wrote stating that'it had been asked to subsidise a bod in a local private hospital at a cost of £50 per ararum, and asking whether, if that were dome, the amount could be taken out of the hospital levy paid by the Road Board. Mr Horrell moved:—"That tho Oxford "Road Board be informed that this Board no funds at present available for tho purpose suggested in letter, but in framing the estimates for tbo ensuing year tho incoming- Hospital Board bo recommended to tnko int<> favourable consideration the advisability of establishing cottage hospitals in tho outlying districts." He held that the country districts did not receive an equivalent return for tho amount of rruoraey they contributed. Mr Wiruiy seconds tho motion. The, Chairman and other members controverted Mr Horrail's statement"" Mr Wolfe stated that a man sent from his district had been refused adniwion, and the people in tho districi had to contribute in order that hv could be treated at a privato hospit-il in the city at a cost of threo guineas per week The Chairman pointed out that since tho fire in the Hyam Marks Ward space had been restricted, irnd unless country doctors advised Dr. Crooko ol a ease, cases had to bo refused admistiotn. The motion was agreed to. Tho City Council wrote offering; to partieiix'ti in the. cost of the disinfortor proposed to be erected by the Bonrd provided tho Council nnas allowed the u?n of it. Mr Allison moved, and Mr Morris Mtfonded:—'That the Board is , preoared to co-operate with the City Conrtcil if t«rms can. bo arrnnrrod." Aftor discussion, the motion was negatived' by 4 vot«s to 7. Messrs Allison, Horroll. Morris, and Gapes voting for th« motion. ** In rettard to tho Lyttelton Casunlty Ward. Mr Morris stated that ho understood from members of the House Cora-.mitt-eo th-it br an expondituro of £50 the Board would be able to take- over the ward on the 30th of th© present month. This is to be done, and the matter was left to the committee to deal with. Tht> house eurgeon reported:—Admissions dnrins Argnst, IQ3; diecharged, 97; died, 7; remaining on . 31st, 99. Cnuses of 3: phthisis, endocarditis, meningitis, and pneumonia, 1 each. Operations nnd«r annosrthe-tice, 113. Atterdnnces in the out-ratient department, 1019. At Akaroa Hospital two patients were admitted, one wnfl discharged and one died. \t Bottle T.ii-.« during Atisist t-vn ra«©e of jfcarlatina were admitted. Threo patients remained at the end of th« month. Tho report was approved. TV>« actinK-ms-tnon reported that Misses Mackay, Holmes, and Quaife have completed their threo months' trial satisfactorily, and were recommended for the nursing staff. Miss Hodg.«cm had been received on trial. Tho report was approved.
