A VERSATILE MISSIONARY.

Mr W. R. Moody, of Northfielcl, U.S.A., -recently accompanied tho now famous Dr. Grenfell, miesionaryphyeicinn of Labrador, on a voyage round the const of that inhospitable region. Ho writes:—"Tho succeeding days rovt>alt>d to us various phases of Dr. GrcufcH'e work, with the emphasis now upon his labours as a missionary, then, i>3 local magistrate, again as pTiilsuithropist, or finally as a physician. Tho oliurtroom of tlio Strathcona is in iteflf Miggestive of Dr. Gronfell's varied ministries. One of tho first objectn one's eyes rest upon is a row of dentist's forceps, that are in constant use. In the corner are gun cases and boxes of diollfl, for the doctor is a keen sportsman, and it is duo to his prowess that his larder is well stored with game. Upon a shelf are his books most in use, amongst Avhich I noticed, in. strange association, 'The Justice's Manual,' Denny's 'Death of Christ,' The Other Side of tho Lantern,' by Sir Frederick Treves; 'St. Paul, , by Frederick Myers; 'Tho Diseases of Children, , and 'The Castaway, , by F. JJ. Meyer. Interspersed with tlueo were scientific works and eurgical treati&es with unpronounceable names, while medical journab and religious ipublioatione filled a rack on one side. Whatever Dr. Grenfell undertakes, he enters upon with enthusiasm, whether monding hie Fflki'.iwj cande, or kayak, or devising means to support a blind mam, whether operating upon a peculiarly difficult ca«o, or preaching to a handful of fishermen'—it is always the same energetic, unceasing activity which makes iteelf felt. This very characteristic, ivhon directed against evil doers, has made Dr. Gronfell feared, and in. many instances unpopular. But among the bost eloment in Newfoundland and Labrador he is respected ajid esteemed. A magistrate in Newfoundland informed us that Dr. Grenfell's presence upon the Labrador coast had made it possible to ensure eteamers where previously Lloyds refused to tako any risks, owing to the frequent wrecks, which seemed suspiciously indicative of barratry.
