THE MUNICIPAL CONFERENCE
HOW THE CHRISTCHURCH REMITS FARED.
Mi- H. R. Smith, Town Olerk of Chrietchurch, returned from tho Municipal Conference yesterday. All .the remite Rent on from Ohristchurch were agreed to except one, and tho end proposed to 'be attained by this wae' gained by a Temit from another borough which ■was carried.
Tho Christ church remits agr-eod to may be summarised as follows:—That tho district electors' rolls of boroughs be need at all elections and polls by local authorities within" boroughs, and all elections and po'lla bo under tho provisions of the Local Bisections Act. That provision Lo made for the u«e of the rolls at Drainage- Board, tramway, and other Local elections, the local authorities wit hin tho borough to contribute towards the cost of preparing and printing the District Elections Rolls in proportion to the number of elections fit which they ueo them. TJiat tho Council may appoint a deputy mayor to do all nets which t-ho Mayor may do except act as J.P. That the- Municipal Corporations Act be amended so as to authority payment of expenses of Councillors when travelling on Council business. That the Government be asked to amend the Dairy Industry Act, 1898, bo as to give Borough Councils or the Department of Agriculture authority to proclaim milk districts similar to those now obtaining in respect to abattoirs, and to control tho sale of milk in tho proposed districts, it being desired to prohibit the sak> of milk within any proclaimed area exe-rpt .under such conditions ar> the controlling authorities may determine. , The remit from Cliristchurch to the effect that Municipal Councils bo empowered to establish public fish markcite and to prohibit the silo of' fish elsewhere within boroughs was lost, but tha Conference carried a. semit from Feilding to the following effect: —"That section 368 of the Municipal Corporations Act bo amended l>y adding tho following worde: —'And upon the establishment of such market it shall nob lawful for any person, firm, or company within a radius of three , miles to sell by auction any stock, fruit, or fish except in such market." This practically achieved what the Christchurch City Council desired.
