THE SMALL BIRDS NUISANCE
The 'Levels County Council on Wednesday had offered to them tho patent right-.- of « bird trap, recently invented and patented by Mr W. King, of Txsvels Valley. Tho prico asked was £100, this giving the Council tho right to use the trap in any part of the 'County. Several members of the Council who had seen the. trap in u*e, said it was tho 'best contrivance for catching small birds they had ever known, and tho Council decided* to meet representatives of all the South Canterbury local bodies in Timaru, on August 13th, with a view to purchasing b-.tween them, tho patent rights for the whole of South Canterbury. Tlie trap is easily taxed, two wires, each of which has a strong spring, being •stretched between stakes firmly driven into tho ground. Opposite tbe middle of the wires two short stakes aro driven, one on each side, and each wire is drawn back and fastened to a tr.'gger, thus leaving a clear rpace of a good width between the wires. A net is attached to the wires, where they arc drawn back, nnd when the birds settle on tho opfn ppace to feed on the grain scattered there a string is pulled,_ which lets off the trisiger-i that are holding the wires; and tho strain on tho aprincs of tho wires beiug relaxed, the latter fly together liko a flash, throwing the net over tho birds. Tho tricgers are very M-nsi-tive, the slisrhtest pull on the string attached setting them off instantaneously. The trap can be pet to any size desired, nnd thero is no reason why a thousand birds could not bo trapped at once. /
