MEETINGS, ENTERTAINMENTS, &c.

There was a large attendance at St. Saviour'a schoolroom, West Lyttelton, on Tuesday night, when an entertainment was given in aid of the. building school fund. An excellent programme was given, comprising songs by Miss Ruby Crane and Messrs Fama nnd J. Child*, and comic songs by Messrs J. Loehrano and A. Haydon. A number of littlo girls, trained 'by Miss Stinson, went through dumb-boll exercises, and a number of boys, trained by Mr G. C. Smith, did muaical drill. Pianoforte selections were played by Mis* Smith, and two farces were given, one by Messrs Haydon and Lochrane, and tlie other by Misses C. Smith and L. Childs, and Messrs T. Halton and H. Gilford. Mrs Haydon played the pianoforte accompaniments.

Tanner, M.H.R., delivered an on licencing legislation) to tho YoUng People's No-License League, on Wednesday. - Besides giving a brief -history of licensing legislation, he told come of scenes and debates in tlie House, and gave a participator's account of the great rtruggle to get Sir Robert Stout's Licensing Bill passed in 1893. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr Tanner.

The Caledonian Society held their usual fortnightly gathering on Wednesday. The programme was progressive euchre, .-md the ladies' prizs' was won by Miss Metizies, and that for the gentlemen by Mr Peebles. Mr Neil, who was in charge of the evening, prewnttd - tho prizes. •

At the Lyttelton-Club room on Tuesday night the members of the Club beat the Lyttelton Fire Brigade in n cardj match by 44 points to 13, and'at billiards by 755 to .560. In a Morris tubs match the Fire' .Brigade team were the winners, by 223 points to 213. A smoke concert was afterWards held.

The Austral band gave two well-at* tended entertainments at Kaiapoi.

The annual meeting of the Woolston Brass Band was held last. Thursday, the chair heing taken "by Mr G. Virtue. The report nnd balance-sheet showed the Band to be in a strong financial position. The Band was very successful,during the year in obtaining engagements, and was again chosen as one of tlie bands for the municipal concerts. A new set of contesting instruments had been procured, costing nearly £5400. Although .not successful at the contest in Timaru, two of its members secured honours there, viz., Mr C; Gallop gold medal, and Mr J. McGrath silver medal. The Band performed in public on seventy-four occasions; of these eight were given gratuitously in aid of publio institutions and charities, v Tlie. receipts for'the year were £424 7s B_d, including £265 for engagements, and tlie expenditure £398 lis 2_d, wliich included part payment of iiuttruments and cost of attending Timartt contest.
